This workshop explores the power of photography as a tool for storytelling across Africa. A journey through diverse visual narratives that challenge stereotypes, reclaim representation, and reflect the complexities of life on the continent.
Ala Kheir is a Sudanese photographer, mentor, prize juror, and exhibiting artist. He creates work that speaks to personal narratives about his homes, Khartoum and Nyala, South Darfur.
Through photography, Kheir actively engages with the city of Khartoum and his home town Nyala, South Darfur, creating personal perspectives and narratives about his immediate space. His work has been showcased in exhibitions and festivals around the world including the African Art Fair Paris, PLP Aspire art auction in Johannesburg, and Dakart biennale.
Kheir also has been involved in training and networking for photographers in Africa, notably with the ‘Centers of Learning for Photography in Africa’ in Johannesburg, South Africa. This network brings together African platforms active in photography education, where the members “exchange ideas and teaching methodologies and also learn as trainers.”
Kheir served as a judge on the panel for many international and local photography prizes including the international Contemporary African Photography Prize (CAP Prize) and was a jury member of the World Press Photo Contest 2022, and the chair of Africa jury of World Press Photo 2025.
Currently, Ala Kheir runs The Other Vision (TOV), a photography platform that focuses on photography education and training in Sudan, through which he assists young photographers and connects Sudanese artists to the rest of the continent. Through TOV, Kheir engages with the public in an attempt to address social issues and change in Sudan.
